The numbers are in and once again, members of the Junior Farmers
Association of Ontario can proudly say they worked together to provide
more than $50,000 for local projects and charitable causes in their
communities across the province.
Not only are our members demonstrating community leadership with these
donations, theyre learning valuable organizational and planning skills
for involvement in future community projects, says James McMillan, JFAO
President. All of these donations are the result of young adults
deciding for themselves how to raise the funds and where the money should
go.
From supporting a young member with cancer, to adopting families and
children in need, to sending 4-H club members to provincial competitions,
as well as supporting the JFAO provincial charity, Farm Safety
Association, last year JF members in more than 25 clubs volunteered
hundreds of hours to run dances, food booths, battery recycling drives,
and even a tractor pull to help better their communities.
JFAO itself is a charitable organization that relies almost entirely on
outside donations and sponsorship to operate programs. It provides
leadership and coordinates the provincial activities of local JF clubs
across southern Ontario.
The 2008 amount was announced this past weekend at the first meeting of
the 2009-10 JFAO board of directors. It follows the more than $50,000
dollars also donated in 2007, and includes nearly $6300 donated to the
Farm Safety Association, which was designated the provincial charity for
2008-09. This years provincial charity is Daytrippers, a relatively new
organization that provides funding for elementary school trips that
otherwise would be too expensive.
JFAO is celebrating 65 years as a provincial organization in 2009. Its
mission is To Build Future Rural Leaders Through Self-Help and Community
Betterment. This is accomplished through providing opportunities for
young people age 15-29 of all backgrounds, but especially those in rural
Ontario, to take on the challenge of exploring their individual talents
and potential to develop personally while being involved in bettering
their communities, networking, and having fun.
Today JFAO is funded solely through the support of members, donors and
sponsors, including its Diamond Level partners Dairy Farmers of Ontario,
the Canadian International Farm Show, and OFA. A 65th reunion celebration
and fundraising golf tournament are being held on August 15th in
Orangeville.

Young people across Ontario have shown their support for community needs is alive and well as members of the Junior Farmers' Association of Ontario collectively donated more than $50,000 last year. Brad Found, JFAO provincial president revealed the figure at the
first JFAO board meeting for 2008-09 this past weekend.
"Wow. All I can say is that this is awesome," Found said as he made the announcement. "This proves JF clubs are still making a difference." From running battery recycling drives to dances and social competitions to fall fair food booths, JF members in 23 clubs across Ontario volunteered hundreds of hours in their efforts throughout 2007. "Just as much thanks must go to community members who support our projects," said Found.
"It's great that we can help out in the community while having fun with other people," says Graham Johnston, a member of Peel Junior Farmers. "You often meet new people and get to share and learn about different things."
"I like to contribute my time to help people who don't have everything they want or need," says
Heather Donkers of Brant JF. "When people go out of their way to help our
efforts, you really learn how the community supports what we're
doing."
JF members are 15-29 and despite the historical roots of the
organization, now come from all backgrounds. Projects and organizations
supported by JF clubs in 2007 include helping 4-H club members travel to
provincial competitions, Canadian Foodgrains Bank, Canadian Cancer Society,
local hospital foundations, Oneida Baptist Camp, the Arthritis Society,
the Salvation Army, UNICEF, local agricultural societies, as well as
food banks and several families in need. The 2006 and 2007 JFAO
Provincial Charities Camp Quality and Hincks-Dellcrest Rural Treatment
Centre benefited as well with support from nearly all JF clubs, and a group
of enthusiastic JF members also travelled to El Salvador in January
to participate in a Habitat for Humanity build.
JFAO and its
affiliated clubs provide opportunities for young people age 15-29 of all
backgrounds, but especially those in rural Ontario, to take on the challenge
of exploring their individual talents and potential to develop personally
while being involved in bettering their communities, networking, and having
fun. With the support of our Diamond Sponsors, Scotiabank, Dairy Farmers of
Ontario, and Ontario Federation of Agriculture, JFAO's mission is "To Build
Future Rural Leaders Through Self-Help and Community Betterment." |

The Halton-Peel Cattlemen's Association and the Peel Junior Farmers club recently joined forces to organize a fund-raiser for the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada. Collectively, the organizations raised $7,500, which they presented to Michelle Baldwin, of the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, in honour of David Thompson, a local area farmer and former Peel Junior Farmer member, who was diagnosed with a brain Tumour in December 2005. At the request of Thompson, the monies will be used by the foundation to further brain tumour research.

Dundas County Junior Farmers continued their annual tradition of shopping for the Dundas Food Bank. This year, the Junior Farmers donated a total of $1000 to the food bank. A $700 shopping spree was held on Tuesday, October 28 at Andy’s Foodland in Winchester. The remaining $300 was donated in cash. Judy Hilson, co-coordinator for the food bank, was kind enough to provide a shopping list of the items in need and allowed the truckload of groceries to be delivered later that evening.
Special thanks to Andy and his staff for their help with this event, as well as their generous donations of extra cases of food over and above our $700 purchase.

Every year the Halton Junior Farmers run a food booth at the Milton Fall Fair at the end of September. Many patrons of the fair enjoy the Junior Farmer food, as they serve hearty, home-cooked portions. The members of the Milton Fair Board take advantage of the great food and jost of them visit our booth many times during the fair. All members of the Fair Board receive a number of meal tickets with the value of the meal to be filled out by the vendor upon purchase. jost of the meals sold cost approximately $5.00, with the inclusion of a beverage.
The Halton Junior Farmers are grateful for the Fair Board’s support and in return they donate the total amount of the completed food tickets back at the end of the weekend. This past year, they donated just over $500.00 to the Milton Fair Board. This is just another example of how the Halton Junior Farmers giving back to their community.
